The optomap® Retinal Exam produces an image that is as unique as your fingerprint and provides us with a more "panoramic" view of your retina, which is the neurological lining at the back of the eye. The retina is the part of your eye that captures the image of what you are looking at, similar to film in a camera.
Many potentially harmful eye conditions can develop quietly and gradually, without any symptoms at all. You may not notice any change in your vision. However, diseases such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal tears, detachments, or even nevi (retinal "freckles") or other minor degenerations can be present, and it is very important that any such conditions are detected, recognized, and monitored over time. Similarly, other health problems such as diabetes and high blood pressure can be seen with a thorough exam of the retina. 
An optomap® Retinal Exam provides:
- A scan to show a healthy eye or detect disease.
- A view of the retina, giving your eye doctor a more detailed view than he/she can get by other means.
- The opportunity for you to view and discuss the optomap® image of your eye with your doctor at the time of your eye exam.

The optomap® Retinal Exam is fast, easy, and comfortable for all ages. The exam is quick and easy. You simply look into the device one eye at a time, then the technician aligns and captures the image. You will see a mild flash of light as the image of your retina has been taken. The optomap® image is shown immediately on a computer screen so that Dr. Daldine or Dr. Samuel can review it with you as part of your eye examination.

iWellness Exam
Retinal problems such as macular degeneration, glaucoma, retinal holes, retinal detachments, and diabetic retinopathy can now be screened for without dilation for most patients. Our office combines two separate technologies to offer comprehensive retinal imaging without dilation. First, the Optomap (digital retinal photograph) uses scanning lasers to create a high definition image of the retina. In addition, the iWellness retinal scan uses optical tomography (similar to CT scan) to evaluate the individual layers of the retina, in particular those layers affected by glaucoma and macular degeneration.

Traditional dilation of the eyes Medical research indicates that many people need their pupils dilated or imaged to rule out any eye disease that may cause the loss of their sight. The drops that are used to dilate your pupils require about 20 minutes to take effect and will keep your pupils dilated for 3-5 hours. The dilation will cause your near vision to be temporarily blurry. Also, your eyes will be sensitive to light, possibly making driving home and continuing your day’s activities somewhat difficult, even with sunglasses. If necessary we can reschedule your dilation for a more convenient time. Side effects from the drops rarely occur, but if you should experience.
